48 Hours In Maui

Hello friends!

A couple of weeks ago I got the opportunity to go to Maui, and who could turn down such a thing? I wasn’t there for very long, but I have a feeling no amount of time feels long enough in Maui (until you go broke that is, which I can relate to, because it is certainly not cheap). If you’re considering going on vacation to one of Hawaii’s paradisical* islands  check out my very helpful review. Yeah that’s right. You can review whole islands these days. Welcome to 2018!

“Hawaii is an egg lover’s dream.”

FOOD

Okay, priorities right? I don’t see how anyone can review a place without talking about the food first. Maui does not disappoint! Neither do I. I managed to fit an impressive number of restaurants into my two days. I know, I’m talented, but let’s not talk about me right now. I had two favorites restaurants: Da Kitchen, which Guy Fieri visited on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop. Yes, I watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. No, I’m not ashamed.  Da Kitchen is what I call “casual fancy,” like a Chili’s but with Hawaiian food. There’s so many amazing dishes I wanted to try there but as usual my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Is that the expression? You’ll correct me if I’m wrong.

Anywho, I sadly don’t have any pictures from there because I devoured the food so quickly…but I can tell you I got something called “Da Kine Moco” which is basically a sample platter for people like me that can’t make decisions. It’s a rice dish that came with chicken, beef, and fish, and  two eggs. One of the things I love about Hawaii is that they put fried eggs on pretty much everything. For some people it may seem excessive, but I happen to love eggs. Hawaii is an egg lover’s dream. Back to my order. I also got the Spam Musubi because I figured I needed more food. Here’s the verdict. Da kine: delicious, every part of it. I could go into detail but it’d just make me sad. The spam musubi however, bleh. Probably an acquired taste to be fair. I can’t say I’ve ever craved a spam and seaweed sandwich..

So about Leoda’s. OMG, I’m fangirling!! This place doesn’t really serve “traditional” Hawaiian food but I kept seeing it recommended so off I went. First of all it’s in a really remote part of the island, so it was nice to see an area I wouldn’t have otherwise. This place has all kinds of sweet and savory pies, most of them one person pies (although any size pie can be a one person pie with enough determination, am I right?). I kept it simple and got the meat n’ potatoes pie. This time I did get a picture.

Now I haven’t had all the meat n’ potatoes pies in the world, but I do humbly declare Leoda’s THE BEST ONE THAT HAS EVER EXISTED. Oh, and that lychee mimosa you see in the corner, not too shabby. If someone offered me a trip to Maui but told me I could only stay for two hours, I’d spend it with that meat n’ potatoes pie at Leoda’s. Call me uncultured, but I can go to the beach anytime.

Honorable mention: Malasada’s from Star Noodle. This place also came highly recommended. Malasadas  are basically fried dough and sugar. What’s not to love?

TRANSPORT

I did not rent a car in Maui, because I don’t drive in my normal life so it didn’t seem like a good time to star, but you might want to. Although there is a bus, it doesn’t run very frequently and it doesn’t run until very late. However, a day pass is only $2, so it’s super cheap, easy to use, and a good way to meet other travels and reduce your carbon footprint together. Yeay!

ACCOMODATION

I stayed at a hostel in Lahaina because I am young and poor. Maui is definitely a vacation spot for older, wealthy…people. Hotels are very expensive (especially if you wait until the last minute to book…I live on the edge) and it’s not the kind of place where you can find a cheap motel. As I learned too late, the Maui airport does shut down at night, and the places to stay around it are like $700 a night five stars.

OTHER ISLANDS:

I did not get the chance to go to any other islands, but the comparison I’ve heard is that Maui is quieter. If you want the beach and scenery, but also want to be in a big city, apparently the big island is the way to go. I however, live in a big city and was looking for green and blue and volcanoes and surfing, so Maui was perfect!

I know you’re just here for the pictures, so I won’t torture you any longer.

*No, “paradisical” is not a word, but I’m making it one. Isn’t that how we got all the words be have now? No? That’s okay, I’m giving myself that power. Paradisical. A place that is “paradise like.” You’re welcome .

Beginnings

Hello friends! I realize I haven’t posted any writing on this blog in a long time, and it just so happens that I stumbled upon a piece of flash fiction on my computer the other day that I found rather interesting. So without further ado, I’m going to drop it down here for your entertainment.

Let me know what you think!

There’s a certain kind of beauty found in secrets that exists nowhere else. And maybe that’s what drew me to him; I could already tell he was full of them. Or maybe it was his boldness, and the way he was so completely unaware of it. Like he thought the rest of the world also had no problem just walking right up to the Queen of England and striking up a conversation. Ok, so maybe I’m not the Queen of England, but that’s beyond the point.

You know how some people just have sparkles in their eyes? Well, his were like that. Like miniature suns allowed to exist as a constant assurance for those who needed it that there was always a light shining somewhere, even in the darkest of nights. You would see his eyes and smile, there was nothing complicated or unsettling about it.

But there was something complicated and unsettling about him, probably the same things that drew me to him. He was so unaware of the rest of world, the way they saw him, the things they thought of him. He didn’t adhere to their conventions. He was different. He was a mess.

None of that mattered when my cheek was tucked in the crook of his neck, my eyelashes brushing his collarbone, another attempt to get as close to him as humanly possible, another attempt to distract myself from the nervous flutters in my stomach that matched those of my eyelashes. And I would be so entranced, listening to his heartbeat, tracing the curves of his arms and hands that I could always hear it when he smiled. There always came a sigh before it. One that to me, signified contentment, wonder, and all the power stored in those little moments that took your breath away. Then I’d smile against his chest, my fingers still dancing across the skin of his arms as I whispered, “I love you.” I could always feel him shiver then as if it ran through both of our spines.

“You’re better off without me.”

He always had this way of ruining the moment, making me feel like the girl who’d climbed onto his motorcycle that first day, desperately searching for something, somehow thinking a troubled boy on a secondhand motorcycle was the answer. Well he wasn’t, and we both knew it.

What Am I Doing With My Life

Hello friends! Miss me? No need to respond, I know you did. 😉

Because I am in a million different places on the internet (humble brag), this post is just to let you all know about some of those things that I may not have previously posted about here, mostly music related. Get excited!

Youtube

I’m officially a Youtuber!  (I use that term pretty loosely). Anywho, I post weekly, mostly original songs and a splattering of hot-mess cooking videos. I can guarantee you will be entertained.

BRASH!

Brash! is an online music magazine for indie artists that I’ve been writing for for about two years now, and somehow I’ve neglected to ever mention it on here. Check out the latest issue to read my artist about Maggie Rogers.

That’s all for now! Say hello in the comments 🙂

I’m Alive, I Swear

It’s been so long my dear friends! Don’t worry, I’ll spare you the excuses. Instead, just humor me and pretend to care as I give a brief life update.

Adulthood: I officially graduated from university (miracles happen). I’m a real adult these days. I pay bills and file taxes and even spent hours pouring over different healthcare plans today. I mean, I also spent a few hours watching Buzzfeed videos, but we won’t talk about that.

Location: Straight after graduation, I packed my bags, left the farm (kidding), and ventured out to the big city. Los Angeles, that is. I moved here for all the usual reasons, becoming an artist and changing the world and all that. What better time to be naive then my twenties?

Projects: So my “ticket” to Los Angeles was an internship at NBC, and a “plan” to become a screenwriter. To be honest I haven’t done that much screenwriting, but I have dedicated time to a few other artistic pursuits. I’m working on another novel, working title In Time. I started a food blog called eatsleepreheat which you all should check out. AND I got my first real guitar! I’m in love. With the guitar that is. #foreveralone. Anywho, this brings me to another major project: music. I started a Youtube channel that I intend to dedicate to it, as a means of forcing myself to practice. I’m hoping posting this will mean I’ll be too ashamed to stop posting, even when I’d rather watch Buzzfeed videos.

I hope you all check out my channel. It will consist of songs I’ve written as well as a few food related videos as a complement to eatsleepreheat. I’ll add a videos section to this blog so you can can see what I’m posting on there. I’m sure you’re just dying to see what sort of Oscar worthy gold I’ll be posting, so I’m giving you a sneak peak below. Fingers crossed to me doing a better job with the channel than I have with this blog 🙂
